The 4th AEGIS Thematic Conference on Africa in the Indian Ocean is planned to take place 16-17 September 2021 at Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon.
Register HERE to attend the conference. Programme available.
Like the previous thematic conferences, we are bringing together researchers from Europe, Africa and Asia working on Africa in the Indian Ocean, with the aim of expanding the network of the AEGIS Collaborative Research Group on Africa in the Indian Ocean (CRG-AIO), and of producing an international peer-reviewed publication, either in the form of a book or a special issue of an Africanist journal.
The general theme of the two-day Conference is “New Gulf Streams – Middle East and Eastern Africa intersected”, and is organised in interdisciplinary thematic panels focussing on the interconnections between Horn of Africa & Eastern Africa societies and the Middle East countries, with a special focus on the challenges of recent geopolitical, religious and economic ties between these regions.
The Conference will also provide an important opportunity to strengthen the existing ties between CRG-AIO members and universities and research centres from the Horn of Africa and from East African countries, and will benefit from already existing structures of collaboration existing between AEGIS centres and non-European university research centres.
The conference is planned to take place in a hybrid format. The organisers seek to hold most of the conference as an in-person event but due to the uncertainty presented by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic a possibility for virtual participation is reserved. The organisers will follow official and university recommendations regarding events.
Proposal submission ended 19 February 2021.
